What is nuclear energy primarily used for?

Presently on the existing fleet of nuclear power plants, energy production is mainly used for electricity production and district heating in some cases.

Nuclear energy is used primarily to produce electricity or heat for district heating like in some Russian designed plants.  Just as in a fossil-fuel-powered plant, a nuclear power plant produces heat from fission of atoms of the fuel, heat boils water, which generates steam that turns a turbine-generator which finally produces electricity. Since there is no carbon and no burning takes place, nuclear power does not emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
