Empowering the Energy Transition: the joint conference was a big success in Mexico City

From October 28 to 30, 2024, Women in Nuclear Mexico hosted a historic event that brought together three major conferences: the 31st Women in Nuclear Global Annual Conference, the 35th Congress of the Mexican Nuclear Society (SNM), and the 1st Congress of WiN ARCAL. This unique convergence created a powerful platform for dialogue and strategic development toward a more sustainable, safe, and equitable energy future.

Under the theme “emPowering the Energy Transition”, these esteemed national, regional, and global organizations joined forces to showcase the essential role of nuclear energy in advancing the energy transition while strengthening inclusivity and equity across the energy sector. The event gathered leaders, experts, academics, and professionals from over 30 countries, uniting them around critical topics for the present and future of nuclear energy through three themed days:

  • Day 1: Creating a Sustainable Future for All
  • Day 2: Nuclear Innovation
  • Day 3: Empowering the Next Generation

The official opening ceremony set the stage for deep reflection on the progress and challenges faced by nuclear energy at both the regional and global levels. Notable addresses from Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA; Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of the World Nuclear Association; Jooho Hwang, Director General of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power; and William D. Magwood IV, Director General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, emphasized the necessity of a collaborative approach to tackling current and future energy challenges.

The opening also featured influential figures including Dominique Mouillot, eighth president of WiN Global; Alejandro Núñez, President of the Mexican Nuclear Society; Melina Belinco, current president of WiN Global; Javier Palacios, Director of the Mexican National Institute of Nuclear Research; and Hortensia Jiménez, Director of the Bolivian Nuclear Energy Agency.

With 165 attendees from 50 different organizations, this event was made possible thanks to the support of our sponsors during the World Nuclear Association and DK KOCEN conferences, as well as our ongoing sponsors such as Emirates Nuclear Power Corporation, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy, and Nuvia.

 

WiN Global: The Beginning of a New Governance Era

This joint conference marks the beginning of WiN Global’s new governance under the leadership of Melina Belinco as President, joined by Hasna Al Blooshi, Aleshia Duncan, and Amal Elrefaei as Vice Presidents in this new administration.
