The peaceful applications of nuclear and radiation technologies are powerful tools for advancing sustainable development Goals (SDGs).
Beyond their well-known roles in energy and healthcare, these technologies are transforming critical areas: they improve food security through crop irradiation and pest control, ensure access to safe water with nuclear-based purification methods, enhance industrial innovation through advanced materials and process monitoring, and support the preservation of cultural heritage, such as analyzing and dating historical artifacts.
Despite their potential, nuclear applications remain underutilized. They are often overlooked in national development strategies, professional training programs, and public awareness initiatives. At the same time, gender gaps persist in nuclear science and radiation technology, especially in emerging and cross-cutting fields, and opportunities to nurture the next generation of professionals remain limited.
The WiN Applications Group of Expertise promotes gender equality, fosters leadership, and supports professional growth. By providing mentorship, training, and strong professional networks, WiN-NAS develops a diverse, skilled, and future-ready workforce to apply nuclear innovations to address society’s most pressing challenges.

Role of WiN Applications
WiN Applications is an initiative supported by Women in Nuclear Global and the National Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (CNSTN). In connection with other national and international organizations, WiN Applications aims to facilitate training, research collaboration, technical exchange, and the promotion of nuclear applications to support sustainable development.
Why WiN Applications?
Significant gaps remain in women’s participation across nuclear applications. WiN-NAS was established to give women and young professionals a platform to learn, connect, and lead in nuclear science for sustainability. Through mentorship, collaboration, and professional development, WiN-NAS strengthens confidence, skills, and leadership capacity, inspiring the next generation to use nuclear science to make meaningful contributions to people, communities, and society.

Leadership
Amira Zaouak - National Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technology (CNSTN)
Amira holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Tunis El Manar and is a Senior Researcher at the National Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technology (CNSTN). She is a member of the AFRA High-Level Steering Committee on Human Resource Development and Nuclear Knowledge Management and coordinates several international research projects, contributing to regional and international cooperation, research capacity development, and nuclear knowledge transfer.
