WiN for Peace

The first use of nuclear energy showed that the energy released when splitting heavy nuclei may be used for both non-peaceful and peaceful purposes.

The military use of nuclear weapons in Japan in August 1945 resulted in a rush towards the development of the non-peaceful use of nuclear energy and by the early 1960s five States had developed nuclear weapons. The Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), opened for signature in 1968, aimed at curbing these developments, requiring Non-nuclear Weapon States never to acquire nuclear weapons and the five Nuclear Weapon States recognized under the Treaty not to proliferate nuclear weapons and to disarm. The NPT further established the inalienable right of all NPT State Parties to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The NPT is the basis for nuclear export controls and for the establishment of an international safeguards system implemented by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through its inspectorate.

The renewed interest in nuclear energy requires a framework to ensure its use solely for peaceful purposes. The 3S concept (Safety, Security and Safeguards) form the foundations of this framework. New reactor types and emerging technologies may pose challenges to this framework and requires new approaches.

Mission

WiN for Peace Group of Expertise seeks to promote activities, training and collaboration in its subject areas based on the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (nuclear non-proliferation, safeguards, export controls, and disarmament), with the objective of increasing the number of female professionals, thereby ultimately contributing towards world peace.

Role of WiN for Peace Partners

The WiN for Peace Group of Expertise was inaugurated on 27 February 2023, with the support of the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-proliferation (VCDNP) and the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs Vienna (UNODA) in Vienna, two partners who strongly support the mission and activities of this group.

Why WiN for Peace?

As nuclear energy and non-energy nuclear applications are spreading around the world, a solid framework is needed to ensure their exclusively peaceful use. WiN for Peace seeks to spread the knowledge about this framework by conducting educational, training and knowledge sharing activities, both amongst its members and beyond. These activities will also help to spread the knowledge amongst nuclear newcomer states and anyone interested in nuclear energy applications.

Objectives

  • Spread the knowledge about the framework that ensures peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear applications to WiN for Peace members and beyond
  • Raise the interest, in particular of young women and men, in nuclear non-proliferation, safeguards, export controls and disarmament
  • Contribute towards the development of a well-trained nuclear workforce that will be required for tripling nuclear energy by 2050.
